Target 2: Women's Healthcare and Wellness
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Chapters will continue to raise community awareness of critical health issues impacting African American women. The primary focuses will be breast cancer awareness and prevention, heart health, nutrition and wellness, and care for the caregivers.
Breast Cancer Awareness and Prevention will focus specifically on early detection through mammograms to improve the survival rate of women diagnosed with breast cancer.
Heart Health remains a focus as the sorority enhances its commitment to healthy hearts through fitness activities and walking.
Nutrition and Wellness will emphasize healthy lifestyles including prenatal, childhood, adult, and senior nutrition programs.
Care for the Caregivers places emphasis on taking care of those who take care of others.
Zeta Chi Omega Chapter:
Hosts a Pink Goes Red Blood Pressure and Heart Health program at the Pentagon City Mall in Arlington, Virginia.
Participates in the Northern Virginia NAMI Walk and online education campaigns to help reduce mental health stigma.
Hosts “Mingling with the Seniors” programs focusing on mental health and wellness activities at senior living facilities in Alexandria and Arlington, Virginia.
Supports breast cancer awareness education through donations, social media and walking campaigns. In 2019, the chapter raised over $3,700 for the Susan G. Komen More than Pink Walk.
For more than 30 years the chapter has hosted an annual Senior Citizens Holiday Luncheon providing a full-course hardy holiday meal as well as mental health and wellness activities to over 100 senior citizens in the Northern Virginia area.
