LAUDED ARLINGTON COUNTY EDUCATOR AND COMMUNITY LEADER EVELYN REID SYPHAX TO BE HONORED WITH HISTORICAL MARKER

WHAT: Dedication and unveiling of the Evelyn      Reid Syphax Historical Marker

WHEN: Sunday, June 23, 2024
                2-4 pm ET

WHERE: Syphax Education Center
                  2110 Washington Boulevard

WHY: The late Evelyn Reid Syphax, a public servant and tireless champion of public education, will be honored with a historical marker in Arlington, VA. Syphax worked as an elementary school teacher in Arlington County Public Schools for more than two decades. She also played a significant role in implementing the county’s desegregation plan in the 1960s and 1970s. She established the Syphax Child Care Center in 1963 after she could not find a preschool in segregated Arlington to accept her son. Mrs. Syphax would later serve on the Arlington County School Board in the early 1980s and eventually ascend to the position of chair.

A lover of culture and the arts, she helped secure funding for the Black Heritage Museum of Arlington and was president of the Arlington Historical Society.

She was a founding member of the Zeta Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® and served as its first president. She also served as a Mid-Atlantic Regional Director for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.®

Mrs. Syphax died in 2000. Read more about the marker here:
